JUNIOR LEAGUE GIFT WRAPPING TABLE

We started, when?, during the Christmas holiday maybe twenty years ago. That Christmas came and went. And, well, we just stayed open, wrapping. And the people of Winesburg seemed to have had a lot of things they needed to have wrapped. We can’t list here everything we’ve wrapped. It might be easier to say what we haven’t wrapped. Though to tell you the truth nothing comes to mind. We have wrapped things that we had already wrapped. We’d say, “We recognize that wrapping.” We have developed a certain style. And the paper? We have had a preference for certain patterns over the years. Colors. Textures. We arrive at the table to find, every day, a queue, a few people deep, their arms filled with this and that all wanting them to be wrapped. It’s become, over the years, more a ritual, a rite, or maybe a kind of therapy. We make clear which is the outside, which is in. We stately measure. Measure twice, three or more times. Cut once. We really look at the object to be wrapped. We are good thinking spatially, can hold it in our heads, all the dimensions of all the things to be wrapped, even time. For us, we cover every nook and cranny of every surface with a new surface as if we have turned everything’s insides out.
